Why motivation is important? (Challenges of a solopreneur)

This is not your daily job, but rather your career. You have put your time, energy and passion into it. You can fail but need to recover fast

Introduction

Everyone can be a solopreneur but not everyone has the mindset to be a solopreneur. But luckily everyone can train themselves to have that specific mindset

Challenges of working independently

You don’t have a built-in support system anymore

  1. No colleagues to share the workload with you

  2. No one guide you what goals you should accomplish

  3. Feeling isolated as you are out of society+

You are responsible for all business functions

  1. Wearing multiple hats: marketing, sales, finance and operations

  2. Need to acquire knowledge on diverse sets of skills and expertise. You are learning everyday

  3. You will put 10-12 hours everyday on working…

Balancing Multiple Roles and Tasks

  1. Constantly switching between different job functions

  2. Difficulty maintaining work-life balance and preventing burnout

  3. Feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of responsibilities

Without maintaining your motivation on your journey, facing that huge amount of physical and mental workload will lead to failure and burnout easily.

How do we maintain our motivation?

Consider using a project management tool

You must start planning your work. What and when are you going to achieve everyday. Try to break down a big task into smaller tasks. You may use Kanban board to drag and drop the tasks or use a simple todo list to cross out the items you just finish. Give a praise to yourself when you successfully finish a task.

Notion table

I like to use the table in notion to mark the task status

Consider not to split your role frequently during a day

Try to do one thing at a time. You are not multi-core cpu and you cannot context-switch frequently. For example, try to do design in the morning, coding in the afterrnoon and planning in the evening. This can definitely stop you from being too overwhelmed.

Automation

As a solopreneur, you must have some boring, repetitive tasks that drain you every day. In contrast, as a software engineer, you often get to focus on building new solutions to solve problems, which can be more stimulating and rewarding.

For example, you can simply write a telegram bot to send you in app notifications when customer report bugs and send you feedbacks. You can minimize your time to search emails as well as talking to customers.

Telegram alerts

For adavance usage you could always write an automation pipeline to build and deploy your software. I will talk about it in the future.

Accept yourself

Sitting alone on the chair all day is boring for most people but we (tech geeks) are not! You do not compare youself with others. You compare your yesterday’s self.

There are some boring suggestions. Eat well, sleep well and do exercises… I personally is a night owl. I am more productive in the mid night. I always fix difficult bugs at that time. LOL

In reality, you will face demotivating moments even you have done what you need to do for motivation…

How to deal with demotivating moments

Have a rest day

Your body is like your muscle. You need to have rest day if you want to grow. Go for a walk, talk to friends or do your hobbies. It definitely help to reshape your thoughts.

Read books

You always work on your own and rarely find help from others. Books are your guides to help you mentally. Read every books you feel you like to read. You will feel confident when you acquire knowledge from the books.

For entrepreneurships,

I recommend

  1. From Zero To One - Peter Thiel

  2. The SAAS Playbook - Rob Walling

  3. Principles - Ray Dalio

  4. Product-Led Growth: How to Build a Product That Sells Itself - Wes Bush

Last thing you have to know … 90% small businesses will fail in five years..
